Taxi transportation is an important way of travelling from and to an airport. To regulate traffic flow of commercial vehicles across terminals, airport authorities are using Nedap’s Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) technology. This system, based on long-range RFID technology, reduces waiting times at taxi ranks and allows a smooth, timely flow of taxis.
The idea of regulating taxi traffic flows is simple. Only licensed taxis occupied by authorized drivers are allowed to pick up passengers at the designated areas of the terminals. This enables airports to control and track taxi access. In most situations the applications are similar: taxis are obliged to enter the rank at the terminals via taxi buffer zones. The taxi lanes are equipped with Nedap’s TRANSIT Ultimate long-range identification readers, which identify the taxi by reading a Nedap windshield mounted transponder. Leading airports over the globe, such as London Heathrow Airport and Helsinki Vantaa, are utilizing this system.
The TRANSIT is based on radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in the 2.45 GHz band. The long-range RFID reader allows identification of transponders at a distance of up to 10 meters in demanding and high-speed situations. For the identification of taxis, London Heathrow Airport uses Nedap’s Boosters, while Helsinki Vantaa uses Window Buttons. These transponders are in-vehicle devices containing a unique vehicle identification number. In case of the Booster, this unique vehicle identification number is combined with the driver’s unique personal identification card.
Automatic Vehicle Identification technology from Nedap enables airports to monitor, control and optimize taxi access. Not only to reduce congestions and waiting times, it enables airports to generate revenues from commercial vehicles and maintain high quality customer service. Nedap’s Automatic Vehicle Identification system TRANSIT meets the high requirements of the CAA (Civil Aviation Administration) for a reliable, secure and convenient control of commercial vehicles.
A greater efficiency and productivity of vehicle operations is one of the greatest challenges today. Especially in mobile environments such as public transportation services. The use of long-range identification technologies improves the fluent flow of vehicle fleets. It also keeps track of vehicle and driver movements and ensures reliable registration of all vehicle related activities. Nedap Identification Systems is specialized in long range AVI systems which enables identification of both vehicles and drivers.
For example for public transport companies all over the globe, Nedap has implemented long range automatic vehicle identification (AVI) products. The technology enables identification of both buses and drivers. Integration with access control or fleet management software allows these companies to manage their bus fleet efficiently; record entering and leaving buses and monitor vehicle and driver related activities.
Public transport buses are driven by a variety of drivers depending on the work shift. To know which driver is on which bus, often a manual procedure is implemented that is subject to human error. In order to schedule efficient bus services, it is important to have accurate information on the availability of vehicles and drivers. This provides real-time data to improve the scheduling of buses.
This automatic vehicle identification (AVI) solution is based on Nedap TRANSIT products. The TRANSIT Ultimate is a powerful radio frequency identification (RFID) reader (2.45 GHz band) with a reading distance of up to 10 meters. With a Nedap Booster transponder onboard of the buses, you are able to identify both the vehicle and the driver simultaneously. The Booster 2G is an in-vehicle transponder that contains a unique vehicle identification number, but is also a card reader that reads the driver’s personal identification card.
Driver-based vehicle identification from Nedap offers fast, convenient and secure vehicle identification. This technology enables close monitoring of vehicular fleets. With this AVI system, public transport companies can verify the status of each vehicle. Vehicles are identified at several points in the bus depots, such as the maintenance area, refueling area etc. When did a bus go in and out? When was the vehicle washed? And when was it refueled? Moreover, each bus and driver is identified entering and leaving the passenger drop off and pick up zones to register if the bus arrived and left on time and who was driving it. At all times a clear picture of the status of entire fleet is available.
Often we receive questions on exactly how Automatic Vehicle Identification solutions add value to the mining industry. Characterized by complex operations under harsh environmental conditions, the challenge in the mining industry is to improve mining operations while ensuring proper management of safety and security. This leads to a growing demand from mining companies for reliable systems and technology to help face this challenge.
As a leading expert in long-range identification solutions, Nedap offers systems to identify vehicles, drivers and employees from several meters distance. At oil, gas and mining installations all over the world, Nedap’s advanced technology is applied to improve secure, safe and reliable workflow operations. In this article we will high light automatic identification systems that operate in extremely difficult and harsh mining environments. The following products are applied:
TRANSIT Ultimate: Extremely robust long-range vehicle identification reader, based on semi active RFID technology, which enables automatic vehicle identification up to distances of 10 m (33 ft) and speeds up to 200 km/h (125 mph).
Heavy Duty Tag: Durable tag for vehicle identification up to 10 meters. This tag is ATEX certified and ideal for tamperproof mounting on the exterior of vehcles and other equipment.
Booster 2G: Patented solution for combined vehicle and driver identification. This in-vehicle device consists of a vehicle identification number and reads and boosts latest card technologies up to distances of 10 meters.
Automatic identification offers authorized vehicles fast, convenient and secure access at gates and reliable vehicle tracking at strategic positions at the mine premises. Vehicle access control traditionally requires the driver to stop and to present a badge, which results in traffic congestion, dangerous situations and insecure identification. Nedap’s systems are built for fast, reliable and secure hands-free identification in the most challenging industrial environments.
Vehicle identification at mining premises is applied to automate vehicle relatedprocesses as well. Trucks that come to a site are identified automatically and are granted access to the premises when authorized. At the designated area trucks can be loaded or unloaded. The weighing information can be linked to the vehicle identification number. Trucks are closely monitored during each step of the operational proces.
Combined driver and vehicle identification increases security so you know exactly who was driving where, when and in which vehicle. Simultaneous identification of driver and vehicle is a truly unique solution which offers the ability of high-secure and convenient access to the mining site. This eliminates the unsafe need for drivers to reach out of the vehicle window to present their badge.
For safety and security reasons (Occupational Health and Safety) all employees who are transported from their accommodation to the mining site need to be identified. Controlling this manually results in congestion and reduced traffic throughput. Long-range identification offers the ability to provide real time tracking of multiple employees at the same time.
The petrochemical industry is faced with increasing plant security and registration requirements. Many industrial workplaces contain, or have activities that produce, explosive or potentially explosive atmospheres. Application of identification technologies for these industries needs to meet the harsh and stringent intrinsically safe requirements of these oil, gas, mining, chemical and dry product industries.
Nedap Identification Systems, specialist in long range vehicle and driver identification, has developed RFID products with ATEX (intrinsically safe) certification for the oil, gas, chemical, mining and dry product industries. These technologies ensure safe and reliable workflow operations with automatic identification in the extremely difficult and rugged environment of the petrochemical industry.
“Depending on authorization profile, based on personal access rights, the drivers will get access”
Innovative RFID systems are installed in places where operations create or release flammable gases, mists, vapors or fine organic dusts such as oil refineries, chemical plants, mines, cement factories, cattle food factories, incinerators, grain processors, floor or wood production plants and numerous other installations.
With decades of experience with RFID technology Nedap develops, produces and tests all its products and systems in-house. For years they have established vehicle and people identification installations worldwide in many different industries like petrochemicals, in order to create controlled and easy access to secured petrochemical industrial sites. These companies also need a reliable identification, tracking and control system to ensure that only authorized trucks are weighed, correctly loaded and administrated in a track record.
Industrial sites with explosive or potentially explosive atmospheres must meet to strict requirements. The ATEX directives describe what equipment and work environment is allowed in an environment with an explosive atmosphere. Nedap’s extensive experience with RFID in the oil, gas, chemical, mining and dry product industries and close collaboration with these industries has contributed to a portfolio of products which meet the highest regulations, certifications and standards.
“Highly secured industrial sites need reliable, controlled and easy access for only authorized trucks”
Vehicle identification helps to speed up the traffic throughput and reduce the congestion around barriers, loading docks, weighing platforms and refueling areas making navigation safer and easier. Controlling this with the manual operation of a regular card system causes congestion in the traffic flow especially during peak hours resulting in costly delays. Products to optimize the workflow of vehicles in these industries saves time, prevents manual input mistakes and offers safer navigation with trucks for drivers who can concentrate in the hectic traffic.
A hands free workflow of the truck loading and weighing process is realized based on factory programmed tags, permanently installed on trucks, trailers and silo’s. Drivers do not need to present a badge while navigating in the explosive areas. Manual input of codes or workflow identification is not necessary.
The typical Terminal Management Systems (TMS) for oil, gas, chemical, mining and dry product industries are designed to provide bulk plant operators to operate their facility at peak efficiency. TMS software is scaled to address the management and reporting needs unique to the trans-loading environment and provides comprehensive tracking of all transactions and events occurring in the loading environment.
Weight scale functions in TMS offer comprehensive management and reporting features aligned with weight based operations. Safety features include maximum weight and volume validation that prevents a driver from loading more than the maximum allowed. These preset values are stored in the database which is aligned with the unique ID’s of the RFID tags on the trailers and silos.
Handled incorrectly; dangerous goods and explosives can endanger people, property and the environment. To prevent this, laws and regulations have been developed for the safe handling and transport of these products. A license to drive bulk dangerous goods vehicles and explosive vehicles has to ensure that drivers are fit, competent and responsible without creating risk to the community.
The Nedap system differentiates itself with the unique driver based vehicle identification concept. A Booster tag simultaneously identifies both truck and driver and allows verification of the validity of the dangerous goods driver license in the TMS.
“A unique driver based vehicle identification concept for different heavy industrial situations”
Nedap RFID products with ATEX certification are deployed world-wide at many industry-leading companies where explosive atmosphere is a risk. All Nedap Identification Systems products support the industry interfacing standards and are easy to implement to TMS.
Many different large-scale chemicals manufacturers have been applying vehicle identification products to complete satisfaction. The identification, tracking and control system is installed to ensure that only authorized trucks are weighed, correctly loaded and administrated in a monitored sequence. Nedap’s products help to speed up traffic and reduce congestion around the refineries loading area.
Main gates of the refineries are equipped with readers and tags to register truck and driver combinations. All employees have a card for access control and attendance registration. Depending on authorization profile, based on personal access rights, the drivers will get access to the loading areas of the terminal. Their existing personnel badge is read over long range in combination with a Booster. Drivers no longer need to leave the vehicle to present the badge.
